Have you ever wondered why you see single shoes by the side of the highway?  You very rarely see two shoes, right?  Almost always just the one.  Well, I think I have solved the mystery...

Aliens!  It has to be aliens.  Now don't dismiss this so quickly, dear reader.  For once, with an open mind, listen to what I have to say.  All the pieces fit... it has to be aliens!

Think for a moment:  people claim to be abducted all the time.  We don't believe them, they must be crazy.  Why are these people never (or very rarely) seen during the process of abduction?  There are two possible explanations:  either the aliens are very careful or they are very fast!  Personally I think they are very fast... VERY fast.  So fast, so unimaginably fast that shoes sometimes get left behind.  Woosh!  Aliens one, Humans nil.

But wait, this isn't the end... have you ever wondered where that one sock disappeared to?  You are sure that they all went into the dryer, as the animals went into the ark:  two by two.  But when it comes time to find partners for each of those socks after they have been dried there is often one missing.  You can look as long and as hard as you like but you will never find it.  Where did it go?  How could a sock have possibly disappeared from a closed, sealed system such as your tumble dryer.   To me the answer is obvious... Aliens!  Who else could be capable of breaking in to your dryer and taking it without you even knowing?
