Memories of Summer

These are some photographs that I took in September of 1998 at Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg.  They were all taken on a single afternoon with my trusty Epson PhotoPC 600 digital camera.  The quality (even of the larger images) has been deliberately reduced from the originals to speed up the download times.

If you are reading this in the middle of winter then I hope that they will remind you that it is not going to be cold forever!  And for those of you that think that Canada is covered in snow for the entire year, these should prove otherwise.   There is one thing you can say for Winnipeg: it definitely has seasons!!!

As the weather changes I will include some photographs of the snow here... although, right now, you could never imagine that it ever snows here.

This photograph and the one following are of the pavilion in Assiniboine park.  It is currently being renovated and should be very impressive when it is finished.

You can see very clearly the British influence in the architecture.   It is very reminiscent of some of the buildings you will see in southern England.   It's the dark beams infilled with a lighter coloured texture that for me gives it that classic feel.

I took a few photographs of flowers:  the idea was that I was going to "wash them out" and use them as backgrounds for the pages in my web.  In the end though I settled for this more traditional textured background.  isn't it interesting that we talk about tradition in a media that has only been around in it's current for for so few years?

If you want to know what flowers these are then I am not the person to ask.  I know very little about flowers and plants... but I don know what I like to look at and those are the ones that I photographed.  I loved the rich colours and the contrasts in colour and texture.  It is a pity that you can't smell them too!
They were also taken as a test of the camera.  I have had many years of experience with film and I was interested to see what sort of a job the digital camera would make of the bright colours and strong contrasts.  All in all I was very pleased with the results.  What do you think?

I don't know what these are called but they remind me of strawberries and cream... I wonder if they taste like strawberries and cream?
All of these pictures were taken in the "English Garden" in Assiniboine park.  I went there in late winter when there was still snow on the ground... it didn't look quite the same as in these photographs!

This is a photograph is of a small part of Leo Mol's sculpture garden.  He seems to have a predisposition for young naked girls, animals, dead communists and lumberjacks:  Quite a strange combination!  Of all of them though, he seems to prefer the young female form... and who can blame him?

The maple leaf: the symbol of Canada.  I can't ever remember seeing a maple in Wales.  In all probability this is the first Maple I have ever seen close up!  It was only a baby so I don't think there was much of a chance of getting any syrup out of it.  Things like that always make me wonder though... it must have been a brave man that first decided to taste the oozing syrup!

If you would like to read more about the park, I found this link.   I might be biased, but I much prefer my photographs.  Maybe I should try and sell some to the city?
