Autumn

|
A sign that winter is on it's way. The temperature drops for the
30Cs down to the single digits in a matter of a few days. The change is dramatic.
The leaves seem to change colour over night: from the dark greens to all
shades of brown, red and gold. |
There seems to be some trees that resist. The odd green tree in the
midst of red and gold. Resistance is futile? Probably. Soon the
temperature will drop below freezing... and a short time after that it will never rise
above freezing. We don't seem to get very strong winds here, at least not very
often. But when we do the leaves can disappear in a single storm. |

This is a photograph of the sundial in the English Gardens of Assinaboine
park. If you wish to compare and contrast I have a page almost exclusivly devoted to
the English Gardens here. The summer pictures were
taken only a few weeks before these photogrpahs of Fall. The change is both striking
and dramatic. I can't wait for the winter series. |
I love the texture of this picture. Fall is all about colour... and
if you look closely this photograph has such a variety of colours and shades. It is
such a shame that they disappear so quickly. But then again maybe these photographs
will help fall last a little longer and keep the snow away: Yeah right! |

Canada is famed for its softwood trees: the pines and the firs,
but it also has a rich variety of hardwoods, like this mighty old oak. I
don't know if they are native to North America or if they were brought here by the
European settlers. Wherever they came from I am surprised that they can survive the
winters. |
And so ends a short look at Autumn. Winnipeg is known locally as
"Winterpeg, Manisnowber" and jokes are made about there being two seasons here:
Winter and July. The summer here this year was long and hot: Fall is
beautiful. Wales is usually grey and wet, even if it does get cold in the winter
(and it DOES get cold in the winter!) the weather here is not so bad... really it
isn't... |

All these photographs were taken on a single day: September 28,
1998. They were shot in Assinaboine park in Winnipeg using my Epson PhotoPC 600. |
